The annual Sharing the Knowledge conference is designed for breast cancer survivors, spouses, family members, caregivers, health professionals, oncology nurses, mammography staff and anyone else interested in learning news about breast cancer. Hear the latest updates about breast cancer research including news about Triple Negative Breast C
ancer, the role of nutrition and exercise, management of menopausal symptoms in breast cancer survivors and adjuvant hormonal therapy and/or bisphosophonates for breast cancer. About the speaker: Dr. Chen received her MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1993. She completed her internal medicine residency at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and her fellowship in hematology-oncology at the Dana-Farber Partners Cancer Program. She received her MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health in 1999. She has been on staff at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and a research associate at the Channing Laboratory since 1999.
Luncheon Keynote: Jonna's Body: Please Hold.
Jonna Tamases, Los Angeles
Experience the wonderment and zest for life in every moment of this strikingly original, hilarious, and incredibly uplifting show. About the Speaker: Jonna Tamases is the creator of Jonna' Body, Please Hold, a one-woman show that completed a 7-week run at LA's Odyssey Theater and has been presented across the United States. Jonna is a 3-time cancer survivor who has turned her experiences into a show about experiencing the fullness of life; the laughter, the joy, silliness and power as well as the struggle. Tamases started performing in grade school, attended Stanford University, and worked with several sketch companies in San Francisco before touring the U.S. as a Ringling Bros. circus clown. She now lives in Los Angeles.
Workshops A: A Taste of Healing Practices: Learn an overview of healing techniques for the management of breast cancer. Speakers will present a 30-minute session on two topics:
Mindfulness for Breast Cancer Survivors: Lisa Rambaldo, PsyD, Dean Health System. The practice of mindfulness teaches a person to become intentionally aware of his or her thoughts, bodily sensations, feelings and actions in the present moment and to witness them non-judgmentally. Learn a basic overview of mindfulness and information about how mindfulness techniques can help breast cancer survivors stay in the present moment. About the Speaker: Dr. Rambaldo's focus includes adjusting and coping with medical illness/injuries; biofeedback; medication compliance/ management; body image/intimacy issues; behavioral medicine; mind/body interventions; and relaxation stress management. Rambaldo also leads a mindfulness group at Dean Health System. She is a certified Yoga Instructor and a certified Nia Black Belt Instructor and has presented exercise sessions at many Infinite Boundaries retreats.
Reiki for Breast Cancer Survivors: Learn the fundamentals of reiki and its potential healing benefits for breast cancer survivors. Speaker: Karen Cooper, RN, BSN, MA, Izumi Joi, LCC: Restoring & Heal with Reiki Integrative Healing, Madison, Wis.
Workshop B: Living Well with Advanced Breast Cancer: Learn information about living well with breast cancer and techniques for coping with the uncertainty or anxiety a metastatic diagnosis can bring. Women with advanced breast cancer can meet with other women. All women with breast cancer and health professionals are encouraged to attend.
Speaker: Lauren Cunningham, PhD, Integral Psychology Center. Dr. Cunningham is a psychiatrist and facilitator of Instant Sisters, a Madison-based support group for women with advanced breast cancer.
Workshop C: Lifestyle Factors and Breast Cancer Survival: A more detailed look at research presented in Dr. Chen's morning keynote, with a focus on research findings of lifestyle factors and breast cancer survival. Ask questions about morning keynote and explore research findings more in-depth. Speaker: Dr. Wendy Chen, Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School.
Afternoon Plenary: Nutrition for Health Living
Milwaukee-based nutritionist Margaret Allen will speak about nutrition guidelines recommended by the American Institute of Cancer Research. The discussion will include a focus on AICR's New American Plate: A fresh way of looking at what you eat every day and eating to reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. Sample snacks recommended by AICR!
Closing Session: Healing Benefits of Infinite Boundaries Retreats. Survivors who have attended a Breast Cancer Recovery Infinite Boundaries retreat will share their retreat experiences. Learn the potential benefits of retreat and find answers to any questions about retreats or Breast Cancer Recovery.
